A Busy Person's Guide to Starting New Habits for a Tidy Home
Allison and I founded Simply Sorted Omaha to turn our passion for organization into a fulfilling career. As working parents of three each, we understand the challenges of balancing busy lives. We’ve experienced the stress of juggling demanding jobs, raising kids, and maintaining a household. That’s why we’re committed to helping others create organized and peaceful spaces.
We all know that making changes in our lives can be hard, especially when you’re a busy parent with an overflowing plate. It can be difficult to find the time and energy to focus on making changes, but it can be done. Many of us lead busy lives, juggling work, family, and countless other commitments. However, with a few simple habit changes, you can transform your home into an organized oasis.
Start Small, Dream Big
One Task a Day: Begin by committing to completing one small organizing task each day. This could be anything from tidying your desk to sorting through a drawer.
Declutter Regularly: Set aside time each week to declutter your home. Focus on one area at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Create a Cleaning Schedule: Develop a cleaning schedule that works for your lifestyle. Assign specific tasks to different days of the week to maintain a clean and tidy home.
How to Make Time for a New Habit
Look at your regular weekly commitments and determine a period each day to block out your schedule to complete a small task.
Find windows of uninterrupted time. It could be first thing in the morning when the house is quiet. During your lunch. When you’re sitting in the car waiting for your kid to finish basketball practice. At the end of your day. Or any other time that works for you.
Schedule your new habit. This is the time each day or week when you’ll do your new habit. Consider setting reminders or alarms to help you stay on track.
Be realistic about how much time you have and what you can reasonably accomplish. It’s better to set achievable goals that you can stick to than to overreach and give up.
Identify the Cause
Understanding what sets off your bad habits is crucial. Pay attention to the situations and emotions that lead you astray. By recognizing these triggers, you can take steps to avoid them or prepare yourself to make better choices. Prepare yourself mentally how you will address the behavior once you identify it happening.
Replace Bad Habits with Good Ones
Instead of simply quitting a bad habit, focus on replacing it with a positive one. When you find yourself tempted to indulge in harmful behavior, switch gears and engage in a healthier activity. Example: If you allow mail to build up in a pile on the counter until there is little space to prepare food, instead, sort through the mail and address right away. Keep important mail in a file or on the refrigerator until it’s addressed and then trash or shred.
Practice Patience and Self-Compassion
Remember, change takes time. Don't get discouraged by setbacks or slip-ups. Be kind to yourself and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.
Tips for Staying Organized
Utilize Storage Solutions: Invest in storage solutions that fit your needs and lifestyle. Use bins, baskets, and shelves to keep your belongings organized and easy to find.
Practice the "One In, One Out" Rule: For every new item you bring into your home, get rid of something old. This will help prevent clutter from accumulating.
Make Your Bed Daily: Making your bed each morning can set a positive tone for the rest of your day. It also makes your bedroom look more organized and inviting.
